The Simpsons - Homer's Odyssey is the 3rd episode of season 1 and number 3 overall in the series.
In this episode, the Nuclear Power Plant from Sprinfield is visited by Bart's class. Homer try to impress them, trying to look like he is working hard, accidentally crashes his cart into a radioactive pipe, fact that will make him loose his job. Without his job and being unable to find a new one, Homer becomes depressed and he decides to commit suicide. The family finds out of his dark plan and and try to stop him, but in the process they are almost run over by a truck. After this incident, Homer has a revelation, he finds a new purpose in his life, starting a safety crusade.
Later he is focusing on the most unsafe place in Springfield, the Nuclear Power Plant, where he starts protest rallies. As a reaction, Mr. Burns (the owner of the Nuclear Power Plant) must come up with a plan to stop Homer's madness.

That was a black version of Mr. Smithers. At first they were going to make him black, but felt that may have been a bad idea. Being subservient to Mr. Burns and all. But he was mistakenly coloured black in this episode.
